ENTERING THE REST: (Joshua 1)

Be Strong & Courageous

A 21st Century Call to the Bride!

Israel stands at the Jordan River. Forty years of wilderness wandering are behind them. Moses is dead. The 12 Tribes are united... The Ark is near... The promise is visible... The crossing is imminent.

Joshua 1 opens not with a military strategy, but with Yahuah Alahim's Divine Presence!

“After the death of Moses, the servant of Yahuah, Alahim spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying: ‘Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the children of Israel.’” (JOSHUA 1:1–2)

The mantle has shifted. Authority has transferred. Moses' servant must now lead!

And the first command Joshua hears is not tactical, but deeply personal:

“Be Strong and Courageous”

Three times in the opening commission, Alahim repeats the charge:

“No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. AS I WAS WITH MOSES, SO I WILL BE WITH YOU! I will not leave you nor forsake you. Now be strong and full of courage.” (JOSHUA 1:5–6)
“Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the Torah which Moses My servant commanded you.” (JOSHUA 1:7)

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for Yahuah your Alahim is with you wherever you go.” (JOSHUA 1:9)

THE HEBREW UNDERSTANDING HERE IS VERY POWERFUL:

  • Chazaq (חָזַק) - to be strong, firm, strengthened, hardened with resolve.

... It carries the idea of inner strength and fortification.

  • Amats (אָמַץ) - to be bold, courageous, alert, determined.

... It speaks of active bravery in the face of intimidation.

Joshua is not told to feel strong. He is commanded to be strong.

Not because the land is easy, but because Alahim's supernatural and powerful Presence is assured!

“As I was with Moses, so I will be with you.”

This is the real Anchor! The same Voice that split seas now speaks directly to Joshua! The same Presence that descended in fire at Sinai now charges him personally.

The strength Joshua needs is not military superiority. It is confidence in Alahim's Covenant Voice!

The Land and the Word!

Joshua’s courage is tied to TWO REALITIES :

CONQUEST & OBEDIENCE

Yahuah declares:

“Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you… From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates… to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your territory.” (JOSHUA 1:3–4)

But immediately the focus shifts:

“This Book of the Torah shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” (JOSHUA 1:8)

VICTORY IS NEVER SEPARATED FROM OBEDIENCE!

Meditate here (Hebrew: hagah) means: to murmur, to speak softly, to rehearse inwardly. It is a continuous reflection leading to active behavioural compliance to Alahim's Word ...

Joshua must fight externally and guard internally.

The land is taken by force, but the heart is governed by the Word.

In the 21st Century New Covenant Reality, the Promised Land is not geopolitical territory - it is chosen human hearts. It is the yielded, transformed vessel where Yahusha now rests His Name!

The Promise of Rest - Nuach

Joshua 1 introduces another crucial theme: REST!

Joshua tells the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh:

“Yahuah your Alahim is giving you rest (nuach) and is giving you this land.” (JOSHUA 1:13)

Nuach does not merely mean cessation of activity (to stop and rest).

It means settling into divinely established stability. It carries the idea of being placed, secured, and caused to dwell safely.

Up to this point, Israel’s redemption language emphasised “inheritance.”

Now “REST” becomes a central theme.

Nuach (REST) actually becomes THE GOAL OF DELIVERANCE IN THE WILDERNESS!

Paul later reflects on this in Hebrews, referencing the wilderness generation:

“They could not enter this rest because of unbelief… So there remains a rest for the people of Alahim.” (HEBREWS 3–4)

The great provocation in the wilderness was not merely external hardship, but internal unbelief. They saw miracles but did not trust them or the One performing and delivering them!

They left Egypt physically ...

But Egypt did not fully leave them ... (unclean)

True rest is not merely arriving and claiming territory, but MATURING IN TRUSTING-BELIEF!

Yahusha later declares:

“Come to Me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (MATTHEW 11)

This is the deeper nuach ... Not inactivity - but still and settled in Yahusha's love ... waiting on Him!

The wilderness matures a people so that when they enter the land, they are not ruled by fear!

The Structure of Unity

Joshua models leadership under one Supreme Commander. Israel is organised into tribal chiefs, officers, warriors, and families. One man commands officers, who relay instructions to the people.

Two and a half tribes remain east of the Jordan - but they pledge loyalty.

“All that you command us we will do… Only Yahuah your Alahim be with you, as He was with Moses.” (JOSHUA 1:16–17)

Notice the conditional emphasis: Obedience to Joshua is tied to presence with Yahuah.

This foreshadows the Bride of Messiah - diverse, multilingual, culturally distinct, yet unified under one Head. Our allegiance to Yahusha is the unifying bond that brings true rest, peace and unity in love!

Courage in the Inner Battlefield

Scripture expands this courage theme throughout :

“Be strong and courageous… for Yahuah your Alahim goes with you.” (DEUT 31)
“Yahuah is my light and my deliverance; so whom shall I fear?” (PSALM 27)
“Alahim has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.” (2 TIMOTHY 1:7)
“Perfect love casts out fear.” (1 JOHN 4)

Courage is not just noise, but inner conquest. The fiercest battle is not Jericho - it is the idolatrous flesh of the self. Fear, insecurity, unbelief, compromise - these are the giants within us that have claimed territory in our promised lands. Joshua’s external warfare mirrors the Bride’s internal warfare. Most of the war is fought in the heart, at the ear-gate, in the realm of thought and response, against demon spirits in high places. Being strong and courageous means guarding what enters, arresting what remains, and obeying what is spoken by Yahusha.

JOSHUA & YAHUSHA:

They have the Same Name!

In Hebrew, Joshua and Yahusha share the same name: “I Am your Deliverance.”

Joshua is a prophetic shadow. He leads Israel into a physical inheritance of REST.

Yahusha leads His Bride into spiritual REST.

Just as Joshua was told:

“I will not leave you nor forsake you.”

Yahusha tells us:

“I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

The New Covenant reality is even deeper.

The Spirit rests- not in a Tabernacle of skins - but in living vessels.

At Pentecost, tongues of fire came to rest (nuach) upon each head.

The resting place of His Name has shifted.

The Bride now becomes the Living Dwelling!

Entering the Rest Today!

Entering rest is not some lukewarm passive encounter, but a determined, courageous surrender!

It is crossing the Jordan of fear!

It is trusting that the same Voice and Presence that was with Moses, with Joshua, with prophets and apostles, now guides and shepherds us personally. The wilderness seasons - flogging - rebuking - discipline - pruning - refining ... are all preparation!

The provocation of unbelief must be conquered.

Paul warns that some never entered rest because they hardened their hearts.

Joshua 1 shows us the antidote:

Meditate on Alahim's Voice. Guard His Divine Words. Act courageously.

Trust the power of His Presence ... for the promise still stands:

“No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life.”

This doesn't mean no opposition ... It means no ultimate defeat!

A Call to the Bride

The Jordan stands before us. Behind us are years of formation. Ahead lies inheritance.

Alahim's charge has not changed:

  • Be strong.

  • Be courageous.

  • Guard the Word.

  • Trust the Presence.

  • Take the land within - claim it back, thought by thought for Yahusha!

Take back your Home-Quarries from the evil one, so that love is the over-riding manifestation occurring daily among each other!

The rest promised is not gutless, fence-sitting inactivity. It is the settled peace of obedience. It is the joy of walking consciously in the Two Royal Laws of Love - loving Yahusha fully and loving neighbour rightly. So the wilderness was not wasted. IT WAS PREPARATION!

Now is the crossing.

And the Voice still speaks:

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid. For I am with you wherever you go!”

Entering the rest begins with believing that!

And then stepping forward, approaching the END OF THE VEIN!
