The account of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4 is not merely a story about a king who lost his mind, but a literal shadow and revelation of what man becomes when he is cut off from the living root and left to dwell in the stump of his own fleshly choosing. This is the condition of a fallen humanity - completely unspiritual! Nebuchadnezzar stood as the highest expression of earthly power - wealth, dominion, glory, and self-exaltation. A beast consumes, reacts, survives, and dominates. This is the key: a beast is not defined merely by its body, but by its nature.
